Faced with the distressing challenge of financial hardship, many West Virginians are being forced to surrender their pets. Our goal is to save lives while enriching our community, by providing the services and resources needed to keep companion animals and their humans together.
WVAR addresses this issue by filling the support gaps for pet owners, actively working to prevent pet surrender and empowering our community through vital veterinary care and support.
West Virginia Animal Rescue is committed to helping the Huntington Cabell Wayne Animal Shelter

The shelter does not receive enough funding from government to sustain itself without WVAR's support. Even the Executive Director is funded by WVAR.

The shelter, as it was originally designed, never had animal care in mind. All behavioral, adoption, foster, and enrichment programs are funded by WVAR.

The shelter is only funded for basic care and any advanced or complicated care, even spay/neuter, is supported entirely by WVAR.
Celebrate the arrival of the surgical unit and the renovation of the former Cook School!

WVAR provides urgent medical care as well as preventative spay/neuter procedures to hundreds of cats and dogs from HCWAS, reducing overcrowding in our shelter.

We’re committed to sustainable change, so the Cook School clinic will bring equitable access to affordable veterinary care and spay/neuter surgeries to our animal-loving community.

Our clinic will directly impact more than 3,000 animals a year, improving access to care for low-income community members and increasing efficiency, affordability, and sustainability for our animal welfare partners.
WVAR’s status as a non-profit makes it possible for supporters like you to make tax-deductible donations.
